It has been 50 years since Japan and ASEAN developed an official relationship in 1973. This year (2023), Japan and ASEAN will celebrate the 50th years anniversary of their relations.
Over the past five decades, the relationship between Japan and ASEAN has been rather smooth, being characterized by strong political and economic partnerships. Additionally, Japan’s contribution to regional development of ASEAN is widely known.
However, under the current international environment overwhelmed by rapid technological change and strong political and economic dynamism, Japan and ASEAN have been facing internal challenges that may, in turn, affect their future relationship.
To celebrate the 50th year anniversary of Japan-ASEAN relations and strengthen their longterm partnership and collaboration, it is necessary to review past relational experiences and identify challenges and prospects that lie ahead in their future relations.
