AJAFA-21: ASEAN – JAPAN CELEBRATIONS 2023

The alumni associations of the Training Programme for Young Leaders were
organized one by one in the six ASEAN countries, started with Indonesia in 1985 for
the former training program. The original idea behind setting up alumni associations was to deepen the friendship that was cultivated through the program.

Today, alumni associations for the Training Programme for Young Leaders have been established in the three new ASEAN members of Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam as well. (The alumni associations of Brunei and Singapore have been closed already.)
All of these associations were integrated into an organization called AJAFA-21, or
ASEAN-Japan Friendships Association for the 21st Century, in 1988 with the objective
of fostering closer relationships between ASEAN countries and Japan through social,
cultural, educational, and other activities.

AJAFA-21 hosts the Regional Leader Forum as well as the Annual Executive Council Meeting on a rotating basis among the member countries. These activities help expand human networks not only with Japan but also with neighbouring countries.

The following members of AJAFA-21 are as follows:
a. Persatuan Alumni Program Persahabatan ASEAN – Jepun Abad ke-21, Malaysia (PAMAJA)
b. JICA Alumni Cambodia (JICA-AC)
c. Keluarga Alumni Program Persahabatan Indonesia – Jepang Abad 21 (KAPPIJA-21)
d. Lao Alumni Youth Club for Friendship Program (LAYCFP)
e. JICA Alumni Association of Myanmar (JAAM)
f. JICA Alumni Association of the Philippines, Inc. (JAAP)
g. The Friendship Youth Alumni Association of Thailand (FYAA Thailand)
h. Vietnam Alumni Club of Youth Friendship (VACYF)
i. The Alumni Society 21st Century Brunei Darussalam (PERTAB-21) – Closed
j. ASEAN-Japan Friendship Association for the 21st Century, Singapore (SAJAFA-21) – Closed

According to the resolution of the 35th AJAFA-21 Executive Council Meeting, which
was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, all AJAFA-21 members must organise an event in their
host country to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan friendship and
cooperation.

In November or December 2023, the final event of this celebration will be
place in Japan.
ASEAN-Japan Celebrations events performed by AJAFA-21 members may include a
seminar, conference, festival, fun run and ride, or other activities relating to the
ASEAN-Japan connection. All of these events will adhere to all criteria and will not
offend any particular race or religion.

All of these activities will take place over the period of four months, from July to
October 2023. Each association might host an event for a maximum of four days.
PAMAJA will serve as the secretariat for each of these initiatives. Accordingly, on
behalf of AJAFA-21 members, PAMAJA would like to requests that the AJAFA-21
ASEAN-Japan celebrations to be included as commemorative activities of the 50th
Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and be permitted to use the official
logo and catchphrase.
